Prom Flowers 101
With Prom right around the corner, I wanted to dedicate a blog with all things Prom flowers. First, I am going to start by saying that I am not a florist from the 80’s. My style is not from the 80’s. I am not your traditional, old school florist. You will not pick up a Prom bouquet from me that is all spray roses with baby’s breath (unless you requested that). When it comes to school dance flowers my goal is to provide a beautiful floral accessory that is contemporary and cost effective for my customers.
My first word of warning: Pinterest and Instagram are full of artificial flower bouquets and AI images. There is nothing wrong with either of these. Honestly, they can be quite helpful as long as it's understood that real flowers will not look like artificial or AI images. One of the beauties of flowers is that their flaws are still beautiful. That is what AI and artificial can not give you. The colors of real flower vary greatly depending on the weather. I can order the same exact thing from my wholesaler a month apart and the flowers could be two different shades. Flowers are nature and can’t be forced to be anything other than nature. We do our best to communicate when we see artificial flowers or AI images that the bouquet will not look like the image you’re showing us. We can certainly take the vibe or overall color palette into consideration.
At Sweet Pea, we ask if you want us to match the dress color or compliment the dress color. Let’s dive into what that means. When we are matching the dress color, that means we are taking the color of the dress and using shades of that color to incorporate into the bouquet. This creates a very cohesive look where the flower will blend in with your dress. Matching the color of the dress works well with colors that are easily found in nature like pink, yellow, purple, orange, white, and red.
Complimenting the dress color means that we are taking other colors of flowers to make the dress stand out. The overall look is still cohesive but your dress color and the flowers will both stand out from each other while still looking like they go together. This way of doing flowers is highly effective for those dress colors not found in nature like blue, teal, mint, black, navy, etc.
My best advice is that when you go to the florist is to have a picture of the dress and a color palette that you like that goes well with the dress. Leave the specifics to the florist. Of course, if there is a favorite flower or greenery that you like (or don’t like), let the florist know. We can try our best to accommodate those requests.
Prom is so fun and I love working with all the different colored dresses and color palettes. Of course, I get nostalgic of my Proms and the flowers I had. Who would have guessed back then that I would now be making Prom bouquets? So cool. Have fun with it. Don’t be afraid to be daring or bold with your dress or flower choices. Trust your florist, that's when their best work comes out. Happy Prom season!
